Overview

This is an ongoing project I completed in my Digital Theory class. The class taught us how to use 3D modelling software in architectural design. Throughout the class, we learned how to use Rhino to create 3D models. These models were used in world-building exercises that developed the story each group wanted to tell. We needed to gather all our work and create a short comic for the final deliverable. This comic used our models and our ability to tell a compelling story with interesting characters.

Development

Both my partner and I decided to tackle the development of this project from two different perspective. Whereas she looked at the world from the perspective of humans that suddenly woke up in the new environment and had to adapt, I looked at things from the perspective of creatures that were able to survive the freezing and slowly develop their home in accordance to the changing climate.

The homes of these creatures was the first thing I tackled, taking into account their unique adaptations as well as the resources they have available to them, I designed a capsule module that could be repeated in any side of the structure to expand the "cities".

The actual cities occur inside of the frozen tsunami, connected through a series of tunnels. This kind of construction gave a lot of opportunities to play with the spatial relationships of major landmarks.

One of the most important things to consider in the development of this story was how the two "worlds" we had set would interact with each other. How do my creatures influence the humans of my partner's work? Although they start off isolated, they eventually meet but how does this actually occur? We imbued these questions into each asset we drew or modelled, making sure our story was at the heart of our work.

Execution

The final comic was organized much like Ms. Marvel Team-Up Vol 1, where the stories of Ms. Marvel and Spiderman begin on opposite sides of the book but converge on the middle-most spread to signify their meeting. Likewise, we were both given half of the comic to tell the story we needed to before our main characters met in the center. These two stories were given their own respective colour palettes to further push that they were separate from each other, but also to make the eventual meeting clear.

The panels were created by extracting linework from Rhino models which were then drawn over using our editing program of choice. The layout of the comic and the planning for what panels were needed was carried out in Miro and InDesign. The frames were created prior to creating the art so that we would be able to create art that fit the needs of the layout. The final drawings could then simply be dragged into frames with little editing afterwards.
